“Proper representation of objects”(应物象形) is one of the “Six Principles” put forward by Xie He who was a Chinese figure painter and critic flourished in 6th century. The Chinese title of this exhibition replaced “象” with “相”(xiàng pronounced with the fourth tone). “相” (xiàng) means appearance or countenance, and it also includes judgment of the underlying meaning, telepathy such as face reading or palm reading. Similarly, by observing and analyzing the structural relationships of forms and the direction of lines—from a crack in a bone to the patterns of a starry sky—the artist can perceive a spiritual dimension beyond mere appearances.

Du Yingqi has long been interested in the structure of nature and he has drawn inspiration from a sense of the ancient as well as a response to contemporary circumstances. The latest works by the artist are based on his observations and experiences. The two larger-scale works outside the gallery were selected from his studio and enlarged to fit the space, while the smaller, more intimate works relating to daily life and personal emotions are displayed inside. This spatial arrangement creates a dialogue from the open space to the enclosed one, forming the inner spatial logic, which invites visitors to sense both the appearance of object and the spiritual dimension inherent in its form.
